This has led to greatly increased opportunities for hunters to harvest as many pigs as possible to keep the number of feral hogs at a manageable level.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its core, a hog hunt is an expedition to remove an invasive species. In doing so, hunters also get to harvest free-range, organic, non-GMO pork products. Because that connection to helping the environment is so strong, and the results of the hunt can quickly and easily be turned into dinner (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/texas-county-feed-feral-hogs-homeless\/story?id=23457485\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or given away to help the less fortunate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), hogs are a great way to introduce new people to hunting.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting people out hunting is one thing. Getting them ready to hunt is another. There are a variety of ways to go out and harvest a feral hog (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wild-hog-hunting-hot-air-balloon-approved-texas-lawmakers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hunting them from a hot air balloon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but the firearm of choice for many hunters is America\u2019s most popular rifle, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanhunter.org\/articles\/2018\/6\/6\/tactical-to-practical-hog-hunting-with-an-ar-15\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the AR-15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Hog Hunting With A 5.56mm AR-15<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_1201\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1201\" class=\"wp-image-1201 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"It's always a good idea to test your ammo before the hunt.\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-768x603.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-1024x804.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-610x479.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-1080x848.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy-627x493.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo_accuracy.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zeroing and grouping a firearm with a 1x red dot can be a challenge at 100 yards.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AR-15 has some distinct advantages for hunting hogs. It\u2019s lightweight and accurate, and with its semi-automatic action and magazine capacity of 30 rounds or more, its very easy to make quick follow-up shots on a hog or quickly clean out a pack of porkers.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of AR-15s are chambered in .223\/5.56mm NATO. While that round has proven to be effective on the battlefield, it was not designed with hog hunting in mind. This doesn\u2019t mean, though, that it&#8217;s not suitable for hogs. It just means you need to take care to select the best 5.56mm ammo for hogs and make sure your shot placement game is where it needs to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Do The Experts Say About Using 5.56mm Ammo For Hog Hunting?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Asbell, a guide with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackcreeklodge.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Creek Plantation in Georgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains it well: \u201cShot placement always matters in hunting, but with .223 and hogs, it matters a bit more. 5.56mm is a military round designed to incapacitate, but it will definitely do the job on a hog if the shooter makes the shot. When it comes to deciding which 5.56mm hog hunting ammo works best, stay away from full metal jacket ammunition. Look for something that\u2019s designed to expand and deliver as much punch on-target as possible. With hogs and .223, the right bullet is important, but more importantly, right shot placement and a shooter who can make the shot on-demand is more important. The 5.56mm is a fast, lightweight round, so your best options with that round is to go for a headshot or spine shot if at all possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My own history with guns <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/what-motivated-you-to-carry-a-gun\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leans more towards self-defense and competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I also enjoy getting out into nature and ridding the countryside of a tasty invasive species. Thus, hog hunting has become a regular staple of my shooting experience. I recently had a hunt with <a href=\"https:\/\/claygullyoutfitters.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clay Gully Outfitters<\/a>, a private hunting ranch here in central Florida.\u00a0 Before I went I set out to select the best .223 ammo for hogs and pair it with my firearm of choice.\u00a0 The results are below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Selecting The Best 5.56mm Ammo For Hogs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gun I chose for my hunt is the exact same gun I used on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/do-you-need-tactical-training\/\">my recent training in close quarters combat<\/a>: An AR-15 pistol chambered in 5.56mm\/.223. It has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.primaryweapons.com\/mk111-pro-upper\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piston upper from Primary Weapons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an Anderson lower, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maximdefense.com\/product-category\/braces\/cqb-series\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CQB brace from Maxim Defense<\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span> 1x Cyclops optic from Primary Arms<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it is capped with a Sig Sauer suppressor. <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ammunition I tested for my hunt was:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1202\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1202\" class=\"wp-image-1202 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"5.56mm ammo for hog hunting\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-768x475.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-1024x634.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-610x377.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-1080x668.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo-627x388.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/556mm_hog_ammo.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ammo for testing<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/223-remington-black-hills-barnes-2-grain-tsx-m223n18-50-rounds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Hills Ammunition 62 Grain TSX<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Group Size (100 yards, from a rest): 2.78 inches<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Velocity (10 feet from muzzle): 2883 FPS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/223-556-federal-fusion-62-grain-jhp-20\">Federal Premium 62 Grain Fusion<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Group Size (100 yards, from a rest): 2.45 inches<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Velocity (10 feet from muzzle): 2543 FPS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/223-556-winchester-super-x-64-grain-power-point-20-rounds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winchester 64 Grain Super-X<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Group Size (100 yards, from a rest): 2.65 inches<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Velocity (10 feet from muzzle): 2628 FPS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/223-556-federal-power-shok-64-grain-sp-20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal 64 Grain PowerShok<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Group Size (100 yards, from a rest): 3.31 inches<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Velocity (10 feet from muzzle): 2664 FPS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admittedly, those are not sharpshooter groups, but then again, I\u2019m not a sharpshooter. Plus, the gun I was using is not a precision rifle. These groups are good enough for my purposes.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on these results, I selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/223-remington-black-hills-barnes-2-grain-tsx-m223n18-50-rounds\">Black Hills 62 Grain TSX<\/a> as the ammo for my hunt. The day came for the hunt, and we could not have asked for a nicer day. The skies were clear, although the ground was very damp from a mid-summer Florida rain shower. With our guides leading the way, we skirted the edges of the Clay Gully preserve until we located a hog. We then had to flush her from a dense thicket of palmetto before I could take my shot. As my guide drove the hog towards me, I had a brief moment when she was in the clear. I raised my rifle and put one bullet right through the spine, dropping the 80 pound sow right on that spot. My friend and fellow hunter, Adrian, was also shooting .223 ammunition that day. He took his hog with a well placed shot right between the pig\u2019s eyes.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 5.56mm round proved again that it is capable of taking down a hog in just one shot with proper shot placement. What is the best 5.56mm for hogs?
