Carrying around a heavy lump of metal (or metal and plastic) is not something we normally do. Learning how to make concealed carry a part of my everyday routine took a commitment to putting my gun on every day, no matter if I \u201cfelt like I needed it\u201d or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrying on the weekends or on days off was not a problem. There is plenty of advice out there on how to carry a defensive pistol if you\u2019re wearing jeans and an untucked t-shirt, or if you\u2019re wearing a loose, open jacket. However, when it came time to look for tips on how to carry at my office job, there was very out there for tips on business casual concealed carry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a saying in the firearms training community that \u201cCarrying a gun should be comforting, not comfortable.\u201d This saying may work if you can adjust your clothing to be as comfortable as possible when carrying a gun, but this can cause problems for those of us who follow a dress code at work. Finding a way to carry a gun while I worked at a desk job proved to be quite a task. I eventually settled on using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/the-pocket-guide-to-pocket-pistols\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a small .380 auto in a pocket holster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I knew there are other options out there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concealed Carry &amp; Business Casual: Making Them Work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made my choice based on the information I had at the time, and I think I did well. I no longer work in a business casual environment, though, and your choices for holsters have become even more diverse than they were a dozen years ago. So in order to see what business casual concealed carry options are out there for today\u2019s gun owners, I reached out to Alex from The Suited Shootist to get some ideas about discreet concealed carry in an office environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesuitedshootist.home.blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Suited Shootist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a website devoted to finding ways to bring concealed carry into the office in a safe and legal way. Alex\u2019s philosophy on concealed carry is being armed and being well-dressed can go hand in hand. Even though I dress more casual these days, I appreciate his insights on keeping safe at work as well as in the home, so he was a natural person to talk with being armed in an office in general, and about business casual concealed carry in particular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Style AND Firepower<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_3282\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3282\" class=\"wp-image-3282 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"untucked business casual\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-694x1024.jpg 694w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-768x1133.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-1042x1536.jpg 1042w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-610x900.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-1080x1593.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry-627x925.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_carry.jpg 1085w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3282\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leaving your shirt untucked gives you lots of options<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst off,\u201d Alex says, \u201cYou have got to be 100% certain that having a gun in your workplace <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/help-me-howard\/fired-for-concealed-gun\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will not result in your termination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and I wholeheartedly agree with this idea. The reason why we carry a gun is to keep ourselves safe from the bad things that might happen at work. A mugger in the parking garage is a bad thing, as is an active shooter in the workplace. Getting fired from your job because you broke company policy about guns in the workplace is also a very bad thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPay attention to not just the rules about firearms or other \u2018weapons,\u2019 but also other things inside the employee manual,\u201d Alex says. \u201cCan your employer search your desk at any time, with or without your permission? If this is so,\u201d Alex continued, \u201cyou may really want to reconsider your decision to carry in the workplace, especially if you carry off-body. The bottom line is, getting fired for carrying a gun is definitely not fulfilling your role as a responsible armed citizen.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are a number of options for business casual concealed carry,\u201d Alex says. \u201cFirst off, if you wear your shirt untucked, the sky&#8217;s the limit for what you can carry and where you can carry it. Appendix carry or inside the waistband carry are all easy to accomplish with an untucked polo shirt or something similar.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitfalls of Business Casual and Concealed Carry<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_3281\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3281\" class=\"wp-image-3281 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"concealed carry business casual\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-1024x812.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-768x609.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-1536x1218.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-610x484.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-1080x857.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster-627x497.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/biz_casual_holster.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exposed clips and unusual bulges are two of the problems of tuckable holsters<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHowever,\u201d he continued, \u201conce you tuck in your shirt, your options for concealed shrink significantly. Even if you use a tuckable holster, the clips needed to hold the holster in place stick out like a sore thumb. This can be mitigated somewhat with holster attachments that secure to the back of your belt with hook and loop fasteners, but even then, you\u2019ll need to blouse out your shirt just right in order to conceal your gun and holster.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I mentioned before, I chose to pocket carry when I worked in an office, and Alex agrees that it allows you to be armed in the workplace, but you will have less gun at your disposal if the need arises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPocket carry is probably the most discrete business casual concealed carry option there is,\u201d he says, \u201chowever, your gun and holster choices are going to affect how noticeable your pistol is inside of your trousers. When carried in a good pocket holster, a flat .380 semiauto like the Ruger LCP results in a shape in your trousers that looks very innocuous, like a wallet or a small cell phone. In my experience,\u201d he continued, \u201ca small snub-nosed revolver looks like a big lump in your pocket, which might cause people to wonder.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Options For Mixing Business Casual &amp; Concealed Carry<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for ankle carry, the drawbacks outweigh any gains in convenience, says Alex. &#8220;I never could make ankle carry work,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The minute I crossed my legs, the bottom of the holster would peek out. And when you figure in the time it takes to get a gun into play from your ankle, it&#8217;s just not worth it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3280\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3280\" class=\"wp-image-3280 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"Other gear\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-1024x611.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-1536x916.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-610x364.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-1080x644.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-1280x768.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-627x374.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear-440x264.jpg 440w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/other_gear.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staying safe in the office means more than just a gun<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex went on to talk about other options for having a gun nearby inside an office. \u201cYou may find it tempting to carry your pistol with some form of off-body carry, such as a laptop case or day planner that are designed to conceal a pistol. I\u2019d stay away from this method,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause if you ever lose track of your laptop or day planner, you\u2019ve not only lost a computer, you\u2019ve given a crook a free gun. Not a good idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex, like me, is a big fan of less lethal options if you can\u2019t carry a gun at your workplace. \u201cPepper spray has become so common, no one really freaks out if they find a canister on you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex has other suggestions for defending your life at your work, \u201cTake a look around your office, and you\u2019ll see plenty of items nearby that could make effective defensive tools. A dry chemical fire extinguisher, a sharp pair of scissors, a heavy laptop brick are just a few of the items that are common in the workplace but can really put the hurt on someone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Options For Staying Safe In The Office<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these items, I\u2019ve found that common everyday tools like a mulittool and a bright flashlight can provide some measure of security at the job and come in very handy as well. At night, a bright flashlight signals to any potential bad guy that you realize it\u2019s dark outside and you\u2019re prepared to do something about it. In addition to this, I\u2019ve found that a flashlight comes in really handy when you\u2019re searching for a lost power cord behind your desk or when the lights go out in the building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrying a firearm inside your office might be an option for you. Less lethal might be an option for you as well, or you may have to rely on using what\u2019s available around you to protect your life.
