Or Is It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSlow Is Smooth, Smooth is Fast.\u201d Or Is It?\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve had any amount of pistol training beyond what\u2019s required for a concealed carry permit, there\u2019s a good chance your instructor or someone else in the class tried to help you along by saying, \u201cSlow is smooth, smooth is fast\u201d as you were struggling. Or maybe it was after a particularly awful stage at a practical shooting match, and one of your buddies said it to you as a way to make sure you remembered to do basic things like get a decent sight picture before pressing the trigger. Either way, \u201cslow is smooth, smooth is fast\u201d has become so ingrained in the firearms community, it\u2019s become a common phrase to say when we need to correct a shooting issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did this phrase come into common usage, though, and does it actually work? To answer this question, I turned to three of today\u2019s top firearms trainers to get their opinions of using \u201cslow is smooth, smooth is fast\u201d as a way to help a struggling shooter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Ellifritz\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.activeresponsetraining.net\/instructors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Ellifirtz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a recently retired law enforcement officer who, among other duties, served 13 years as the full-time tactical training officer for a central Ohio police department. He\u2019s also a firearms trainer, writer, and a regular presenter at the Rangemaster Tactical Conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3347 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"smooth draw\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-938x1024.jpg 938w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-768x838.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-1407x1536.jpg 1407w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-610x666.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-1080x1179.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw-627x684.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/smooth_draw.jpg 1466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a>I understand the sentiment behind the phrase, but it makes people think that by moving slowly, they&#8217;ll eventually get fast. That&#8217;s not true,\u201d Ellifritz says. \u201cSmoothness does increase speed, but for optimal increases, we need to combine smoothness with going fast. I&#8217;m convinced that you can&#8217;t get fast unless you shoot fast in training, even if that (temporarily) means you lose some smoothness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Keepers\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/keepersconcealment.com\/classes-awareness-defense-training\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Keepers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes some of the best AIWB holsters on the market today. He\u2019s also a top firearms trainer with certifications from some of the best schools in the country, specializing in teaching people how to draw smoothly and efficiently from the appendix position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSlow is slow, smooth is smooth, and fast is fast,\u201d Keepers says. \u201cMost of the time, smooth is fast. But a lot of the time, fast is just fast, and it doesn\u2019t have to be smooth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s kind of a dichotomy in this,\u201d Keepers went on to say. \u201cSmooth can be fast, but you have to be going fast to begin with. When it comes to getting your gun in play, fast can be fast while looking like a train wreck. However, it\u2019s still fast. If you perform an action smoothly, it will probably be faster, but first, we need to define what \u2018fast\u2019 actually is. Fast for a champion pistol shooter like Rob Leatham is one thing, fast for you and me is another thing altogether. The fast that works best is a fast that accomplishes the task quickly, no matter how smooth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Just Slow Down.&#8221; Or Not.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018If you&#8217;re missing your target, slowing down may not be the end all, be all answer,\u201d Keepers continued. &#8220;The simplest answer is not to move the gun during the trigger press, while keeping the sights\/dot on the target. I see many people put way too much time into a shot that doesn\u2019t require extra time. Normally, this builds a lot of anticipation and that causes a miss. even though they took their time.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But remember there is a dichotomy here. Some targets obviously take more time than other targets, but they shouldn\u2019t take an exorbitant amount of time or an artificial time pause.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott Jedlinski<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernsamuraiproject.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott Jedlinski<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aka \u201cJedi\u201d) is a martial artist and USPSA competitor who specializes in teaching the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/getting-started-with-red-pistol-dot-sights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">red dot optics on a pistol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He\u2019s known for improving draw technique and decreasing the time needed to get your first shot with a pistol on-target. Scott has trained a wide variety of top-tier law enforcement units and is also an accomplished firearms writer. Here are his opinions on \u201cSlow is smooth, smooth is fast.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Slow Is Smooth, Smooth Is Fast&#8221; Tells Only Part Of The Story<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3348 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-296x300.jpg\" alt=\"fast reload\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-1012x1024.jpg 1012w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-768x777.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-1518x1536.jpg 1518w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-610x617.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-1080x1093.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload-627x635.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/fast_reload.jpg 1581w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe origin of \u2018slow is smooth, smooth is fast\u2019 came from elite units of the U.S. military,\u201d Jedlinski said. \u201cThe saying evolved from something Wyatt Earp said about trick shooting, \u2018Make haste, slowly.\u2019 The problem is, the original saying includes a critical piece which is always left out. The entire saying is \u201cslow is smooth, smooth is fast and speed is the economy of motion\u2019. This third part of the axiom means that speed is definitely a part of the whole process.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018Slow is smooth, smooth is fast\u2019 is used quite often in conjunction with the phrase \u2018muscle memory\u2019,\u201d Jedlinski continued. \u201cThe problem is, there is no such thing as \u2018muscle memory\u2019.\u201d Muscles have no memory. Nerves are what move muscles, and it\u2019s there where the speed develops. If you repeat an action slowly and carefully, then the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenhub.com\/en\/library\/anatomy\/the-myelin-sheath-and-myelination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myelination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the nerves will allow for unconscious technique, and then the speed really starts to appear.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow Is Smooth, Smooth Is Fast And Speed Is The Economy Of Motion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSmooth and fast are related, but they are not the same thing, Jedlinski went on to say. \u201cA draw can be bobbled at some point, but still be very fast. The idea that we should learn slowly, then smoothly and then speed will come is wrong.\u00a0 We should carefully learn good technique first, then practice so it becomes more and more subconscious, and then the speed will develop. If you go fast all the time with no technique, you will fail. In the same way, technique that never gets fast is also a failure. Technique opens the door to speed. Speed and accuracy come from efficiency, efficiency comes from technique. Instructors who say \u2018slow is smooth, smooth is fast,\u2019 omit that crucial last step. They offload the technique onto the student, and the student then continues to struggle.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it\u2019s a popular saying, when it comes to firearms training, \u201cSlow is smooth, smooth is fast\u201d tells only part of the story. Going slow for slowness\u2019s sake is not the solution. Proper technique is the key to improvement, not the speed you perform any given action.
