There\u2019s no reason to go over them and again and again because all of us always follow all of them all the time, right? Right? Well, based on my experience at the public ranges near me, some of us need some schooling on what is and is not safe behavior at the range. There are also millions of new gun owners out there who are new to gun ownership and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/learning-the-rules-of-gun-range-etiquette\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gun range etiquette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These people have no idea about simple things that experienced gun owners take for granted. Everything revolves around this idea. Let\u2019s begin in the home. You should own a sturdy case for each gun you take to the range on a regular basis. Whether that\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.511tactical.com\/bags-packs\/gun-ammunition-storage\/soft-cases.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soft-sided<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planomolding.com\/hunting\/gun-cases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard-sided case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t matter for our purposes. But what do you do with your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/concealed-carry-gun\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concealed carry gun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? The answer to that question will vary according to your destination and what your plans are. The ranges where I shoot don\u2019t care if you\u2019re carrying concealed, as long as it stays in the holster while you\u2019re shooting something other than your carry gun. This may not be true of where you shoot. Wait until everyone is back<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of range officers, most indoor ranges and some outdoor ranges will have range officers who are tasked with keeping you and everyone else safe. That\u2019s their job. Let them do it. You may be an experienced shooter who always follows the gun safety rules. However, there may be in-house rules at the range that you don\u2019t know about. If there\u2019s any doubt, either call ahead before you go to the range or ask an employee when you arrive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Safety Officers Are There For Your Safety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing how to bring your guns to the range also means knowing how your actions affect everyone else around you. In my experience, many of the problems with basic gun safety happen when people take their guns to the firing line at the range. Rule Number Two states that all guns need to be pointed in a safe direction. If you uncase your gun behind where everyone else is shooting their guns, there is a good chance you\u2019ll sweep the barrel of your gun across any number of people as you place it at your shooting position. Yes, you know your gun is unloaded (or at least you should know that), but does everybody else? Keep your guns pointed downrange and bring your case to the gun, not your gun to the case, and everything should be alright.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you shoot on an outdoor range, there may be times when you or someone else may need to set up or adjust a target. Make your gun safe before you head downrange. Unload all your guns. Eject any magazines and visually and physically verify that the guns are empty. Then, crucially, leave everything alone until you return. No one in your party should touch anything while you\u2019re downrange, and you shouldn\u2019t touch anything while anyone else is downrange either. Sounds simple, but you\u2019d be amazed at how often I\u2019d heard a range officer order someone to leave their guns alone while someone is hanging up a target on an outdoor range.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put The Four Rules Into Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_3593\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-magnific_type=\"image\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3593\" class=\"wp-image-3593 size-medium\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"keep your guns cased\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-1024x650.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-1536x975.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-610x387.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-1080x686.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases-627x398.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.ammoman.com\/blog\/media\/guns_in_cases.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bring your cases to your guns, not your guns to your cases<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule number two, always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction, applies when you are shooting your gun as well as when you are taking it to the range. I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve had someone else\u2019s muzzle sweep over me as I shot next to them at the firing line. Yes, you may \u201cknow how to shoot.\u201d Yes, you may know how to bring your gun to the range. But if you don\u2019t know enough to keep your gun pointed in a safe direction at all times, even when things go wrong, you really haven\u2019t learned the rules of gun safety. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your gun malfunctions, keep it pointed in a safe direction at all times. Keep your gun pointed in a safe direction when you\u2019re talking with your friends. Keep your gun pointed in a safe direction while you\u2019re reloading. After all, the rule says \u201cAlways keep your gun pointed in a safe direction,\u201d not \u201cKeep your gun pointed in a safe direction, except when you\u2019re arguing with a friend at the gun range.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shooting sports are only as safe as the people at the range. Guns don\u2019t go off by themselves, and they don\u2019t get pointed in unsafe directions by themselves either. Staying\u00a0 safe when you\u2019re at the range begins long before you reach the range itself.
