Also known as 38 Smith and Wesson Special, .38 special ammo is affectionately known as an accurate round with recoil that's mostly manageable.

38 special hollow point ammunition imageThe history of 38 special goes all the way back to the turn of the 20th century. At that point, the .38 Special was eyed as an improvement over the .38 Long Colt cartridge. Originally loaded with black powder, but it didn't take long for smokeless powder to make its way to the cartridge soon thereafter.

A low pressure cartridge, you'll find plenty of shooters who enjoy shooting .38 special ammo at the range today. That said, it's also a worthy cartridge for folks looking for a self-defense round. With bullet weights ranging from about 110 grain to 200 grain, you'll find muzzle velocity typically between 680 feet per second and 980 feet per second with the cartridge. Of course, if you are looking for a training round, lean toward a full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet as they are most cost-effective. For protection, look for a jacketed hollow point (JHP) projectile with a more sophisticated bullet that will expand upon impact with your target.
