Winchester’s Double X series ammunition dials the buck’s chances down to nil. This is a behemoth of a shotgun shell – a true 3-1/2” magnum, loaded with about 1-8/10 ounces of 00 buckshot and powder that delivers a bone-crushing 1,450 fps muzzle velocity (5 dram equivalent). Counted all together, the 15 pieces of shot possess more muzzle energy than some 300 Win Mag bullets.

This shell includes a thick wad to help reduce recoil’s effect on the shoulder and shot column alike. The shot is better protected against deformation by its hard copper plating. That same feature promotes deeper penetration into the animal. Between its plated shot and immense power, this shell is what many would consider to be “too much” for home defense, as in “the recoil and risk of over-penetration are both too much for the job.”
