22 WMR SPEER GOLD DOT SHORT BARREL 40 GRAIN JHP (500 ROUNDS)
Don’t let this round’s apparently low 1,050 fps muzzle velocity throw you. That was taken with a 2” test barrel, because Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 22 WMR is designed for effective self-defense with a subcompact pistol. (If you hike it up to 4”, then you can expect closer to 1,300 fps MV, with close-range striking energy in the ballpark of 150 ft lbs.)Speer loads this round with the smallest Gold Dot bullet they make. It’s the 40 grain .22 cal model: an itty-bitty jacketed hollow point with a fully bonded jacket to promote extremely deep penetration. At 10’, you can reasonably expect the JHP to sink about 13” deep into bare ballistic gel. The bullet’s nose cavity, which is formed during a sequence of die presses, yields extraordinarily uniform terminal expansion. It’s not magic ammo, but it’s just about the best your little 22 Magnum can fire if your life ever depends on it.
