The original Silvertip bullet actually had an aluminum jacket, although that metal proved a little too soft to navigate a feed ramp without becoming damaged in the process. The modern Silvertip jacketed hollow point has a more conventional copper jacket, with a thin layer of nickel plating.

The Silvertip JHP’s plating doesn’t really enhance its performance in any measurable way, but it is still effective at its job. Those long grooves allow the jacket to split apart uniformly, even at lower velocities, which promotes wider and more injurious terminal expansion!
