About This Winchester 5.56x45mm Ammunition
“Gotta have the green if you wanna make the scene!” The Mask spoke those words to live by in the classic 1994 action/comedy The Mask, which is indisputably one of the greatest movies of all time. The Mask may have been referring to cash, but do you know what else is green and absolutely necessary if you want to make “the scene” (i.e. the rifle range)? Nothing other than Winchester’s green tip 5.56x45 ammunition, of course!
Those FMJs’ tips aren’t a pleasing shade of emerald because they are made of polymer. They are actually painted, because an M855 projectile’s signature feature is actually on the inside – a 7 grain steel “penetrator” tip, which lives up to its name by helping the FMJ pierce sheet metal and other light barriers.
The M855 bullet isn’t advisable for shooting steel targets (for reasons you might correctly surmise). It’s also certain to attract a magnet, which is why many shooting ranges expressly forbid it. Plan accordingly!
Winchester’s military-grade brass cases only look like they were previously fired. In truth, they are brand new, and owe their discoloration to the fact that they were annealed without being polished up afterward.
