The 50 Action Express isn’t just some ordinary handgun cartridge. It is an extraordinary handgun cartridge! Arguably too large to be practical for self-defense – but that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t hoist that hefty hand cannon and give it all your mighty when your back’s against the wall.

This is proper 50 AE defensive ammunition. It’s not loaded with a needlessly fancy projectile – just 300 grains of copper and lead, with a hollow point nose cavity that will initiate terminal expansion after impact. As if the 50 AE’s copious striking energy weren’t enough, the bullet will also open up to punch out a wound channel which is significantly wider than half an inch! Probably not going to prevent over-penetration, though, so take extra, extra special care about what’s behind your target if you ever do have to fire in defense.

This round’s JHP has a plated jacket – not a true jacketed one – but Magnum Research has confirmed that that’s OK as far as their Desert Eagle is concerned. That fine bullet is nestled in a virgin brass case which is worth its weight in gold (well, technically brass) if you want to set some time aside for handloading in the near future.
