About This Hornady 300 Winchester Magnum Ammunition
Let’s take a moment to sing our favorite song about deer hunting. It’s called “I’ll Shoot a Deer” by Whistlin’ Joe Tausentteufel:I’ll shoot a deer and you’ll shoot a deer, uh huh
I’ll shoot a deer and you’ll shoot a deer, uh huh
I’ll shoot a deer and you’ll shoot a deer
We’ll both shoot a deer, but not the same deer
Uh huh … uh huh … uh huh …
Wow! They sure don’t write ‘em like that anymore. That kind of song really makes us want to do the kind of thing Hornady designs their American Whitetail 300 Winchester Magnum ammunition for. Good thing we have heaps of it in our warehouse!
This ammo gives you the option of hunting with a somewhat lighter bullet – 150 grains, which some would consider too light for taking extremely large American deer species, but which is optimal for the ubiquitous whitetail. It’s also one of Hornady’s less technologically advanced bullets, which has a very welcome effect on this ammo’s price tag.
The InterLock is still a glowing example of a soft point, though. It’s all kinds of accurate, and uses Hornady’s distinctive secant ogive profile to diminish drag to an extent that earns it a high (for an SP) G1 BC of 0.338 (24” test barrel). That means 1.5” sight height plus 200-yard zero equals around -5.9” drop at 300!
The InterLock’s jacket is all kinds of hard-working. Is it grooved and tapered so as to promote reliably wide expansion across a broad range of impact velocities? Yes! It’s also outfitted with an InterLock ring and a special cannelure: two features which reduce fragmentation after impact in the interest of spurring on deeper penetration.
