Choosing .308 or 7.62x51 Ammo
Generally, you'll want to shoot a full metal jacket (FMJ) or full metal jacket boat-tail bullet loaded ammo if you're just training or shooting at the range. If you're headed out to hunt, we'd recommend something with a bullet that expands. Typically, that means hollow points or something with a sophisticated polymer tip, depending upon the game you're looking to hunt. Finally, if precision really matters and you're shooting a long distance competition or something along those lines, match grade ammo is likely going to fit the bill. Want to learn more about match ammo? Check out this post at the School of Guns where we tested various match grade .308 rounds for accuracy.
Generally available in full metal jacket (FMJ) or with more sophisticated projectiles like soft point and jacketed hollow point (JHP), .308 Winchester is a powerful rifle cartridge that is one of the most popular hunting cartridges in the world. You'll commonly find .308 rounds with bullets ranging from 150 grain all the way up to nearly 200-grain. Corresponding muzzle velocities are more than 2800 feet per second for the 150 grain rounds and around 2,600 ft/second for the heavier rounds.
Technically speaking, .308 and 7.62x51mm rounds are not identical, although many recreational shooters treat them as such. The slight difference between the two rounds lies in the amount of headspace in each cartridge. Headspace is generally shorter in .308 Winchester, which leaves less room for the case to expand and increased pressure when firing. While rare, firing a .308 round in the larger 7.62x51mm chamber could result in catastrophic failure of the rifle. However, firing 7.62x51mm NATO rounds in a .308 rifle should cause no worries when it comes to functionality.
Whether it's reliable Wolf rounds for the range or Remington Core-Lokt to bring down a big buck on your next hunting trip, the AmmoMan works hard to ensure we have just the .308 ammunition you need for your next adventure.
