About This Hornady .45 Automatic Ammunition
John Browning laid the groundwork for one of the greatest handgun cartridges of all time (certainly better than the 455 Webley, at least). Hornady has taken Browning’s hallowed design and made a few clever tweaks to it. The result? One of your very best choices of 45 Auto +P ammo for personal defense.• Flex Tip eXpanding. Hornady’s FTX jacketed hollow point holds a piece of red polymer inside its nose cavity. It’s purpose? To keep the cavity free and clear of debris until it has plunged inside soft tissue, at which point it allows the JHP to open up wide and deal serious harm.
• Overpressurization. This is a +P cartridge: loaded to generate higher-than-standard chamber pressure, which accounts for its 185 grain bullet’s supersonic muzzle velocity (for context, std. press. 45 Auto 185gr MV is usually ~1,050 fps). So long as you don’t fire this ammo in a pistol that isn’t rated for it, you’ll hit your target harder than normal.
• Low-flash propellant. Bright light blinds eyes that are already adjusted to darkness. Bright light is precisely what this ammo’s low-flash propellant avoids producing on ignition, so you can continue to see your target after opening fire on it. Extremely helpful, for reasons that don’t beg explanation!
