The M80 is the stock and standard 7.62x51 cartridge. Long used by the U.S. Army against personnel and other unarmored targets, it also does good by the recreational shooter who’s simply concerned with hitting paper.

This cartridge by Prvi Partizan sports a 145 grain FMJBT projectile. Its base tapers to reduce the amount of drag it creates in flight. Alongside its aerodynamic profile and 2,838 fps muzzle velocity, this round’s bullet attains a 0.406 ballistic coefficient as it shrieks through the air. Stats like those mean the bullet still harbors over 1,050 ft lbs of energy at 500 yards, and remains supersonic past 1,000 yards.

A non-expanding bullet like this is not a great choice for hunting when you’d like to put your quarry down without having to track it. It would prove capable of managing human-sized threats – that’s quite literally reason why the 7.62x51 exists.
